12/2008 BULLEIT KENTUCKY STRAIGHT BOURBON WHISKEY

12/2008 BULLEIT KENTUCKY STRAIGHT BOURBON WHISKEY
Wow, how long ago did we first review this Bourbon — 10 years?

Times change, and so has this whiskey. As Bourbon fiend extraordinaire Chuck Cowdery tells it, BULLEIT has been made at a couple different distilleries over the years, and now seems to be produced at FOUR ROSES distillery.

This 90 proof whiskey is a bit strong to take straight. Sip it neat and you get the sense that its flavors are there but not quite accessible. But, add a little cool water (not ice) and…. POOF! BULLEIT blooms. Suddenly it feels creamy, not spicy, in the mouth. Take your time sipping it and you will pick up cereal, rye, menthol, barrel, and a slight flowery note that we cannot identify. (Cowdery and others describe it as violets.) Interesting. (Rating ***3/4)
