Fighting Cock Bourbon Whiskey

When we brought back a bottle of Fighting Cock Bourbon to the vacation house, we were met with perplexed and slightly uneasy countenances.  Fighting Cock?  Who makes that?

Admittedly, we ourselves were a little uncertain.  We had reviewed this Bourbon eons ago but could not be certain that it was good now as it was then.  Would it be too harsh for our genteel friends? Fighting Cock is not much advertised by Heaven Hill, its producer.  Unlike Jim Beam white label, you cannot find Fighting Cock in every bar and at every liquor store.

Which is a pity, because it offers tremendous bang for the buck.  This 103 proof, six-year old Bourbon ran us $23 for a liter. It has a handsome red-bronze color, and with a little water opens up nicely. Everyone who tried it went back for seconds. It is viscous and shows notes of vanilla, corn, and rye. Rating ****)
