Kluge, Kluge… Where have we heard that name before? Oh yes, John Kluge is a media mogul. He gave gobs of money to the Library of Congress, helping it restore the fabulously ornate Jefferson Building (which had fallen into semi-ruin), endow fellowships for scholars, and more. Patricia Kluge, his third wife, has a fine winery in Virginia that turns out a range of wines (Chardonnay, Rose, Bordeaux-style reds). This $38 a bottle sparkling wine tastes best when served just slightly chilled; then the delicate pear, almond, and toast flavors show themselves. (Rating ****)
